Summer is in full swing, bringing an increase in boating activity on Lake Conroe. Whether a first-time visitor, or experienced boater, it is always good to be reminded of the key boater safety tips to ensure a fun and safe experience for everyone on the water.
Following these safety tips will help protect you, your passengers, and others while on the lake all season long.
- Take a Boater Safety Course
- Boater education is one of the best ways to stay safe on the water. Courses are offered by both the U.S. Coast Guard and Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD).
- If you were born on or after September 1, 1993, you must take this boaters education course:

- You can find additional information by visiting: https://tpwd.texas.gov/education/boater-education
- Preform a Pre-Departure Safety Check
- Before leaving the dock, ensure all required safety equipment is onboard, in good condition, and easily accessible.
- A complete checklist is available on the TPWD’s website:
- Check the Weather and Plan Accordingly
- Texas weather can be unpredictable and change rapidly. Before departing, check the forecast, keep an eye out for changing conditions, and avoid boating during severe weather.
- For additional Lake Conroe conditions, visit https://www.sjra.net/ and the U.S. National Weather Service Houston-Galveston Texas facebook.
- Know and Follow All Boating Rules
- Many boating accidents are caused by distractions, improper lookout, or failure to follow navigation rules. Stay alert, remain aware of your surroundings, and follow all regulations to help prevent collisions and injuries.
- NEVER Boat Under the Influence
- Operating a boat while impaired by alcohol or drugs is not only illegal but extremely dangerous.
- ALWAYS Wear a Life Jacket
- Wearing a properly fitted jacket is the single most effective way to prevent drowning.
- According to national boating statistics, the majority of fatal boating incidents involve victims who were not wearing a life jacket.
- There are many lightweight and comfortable options designed to be used in a wide range of boating activities.
Staying safe while having fun ensures everyone will enjoy their time on Lake Conroe this summer.
