The San Jacinto River Authority (SJRA) plays a vital role as a wholesale water and wastewater service provider, serving communities, utilities, and industrial partners throughout Montgomery County and parts of Harris County. By providing raw water, treated drinking water, and wastewater services to Municipal Utility Districts (MUDs), water utility companies, and industrial users, SJRA supports these entities in providing essential services to their customers.
Highlands Division
As SJRA’s first division, the Highlands Division has supplied raw water since 1937 through a 27-mile canal system in East Harris County. This water supports agricultural, municipal, and industrial operations, highlighting SJRA’s long-standing role as a partner in regional distribution of water.
Woodlands Division
For more than 50 years, the Woodlands Division has provided wholesale water and wastewater services to the 11 MUDs within The Woodlands. The division operates and manages six elevated storage tanks, nine ground storage tanks, 37 water wells, and more than 140 miles of transmission line, ranging in size from 12 inches in diameter and larger.
As the wholesale wastewater provider, SJRA Woodlands Division operates and manages three wastewater treatment plants, 29 lift stations, and over 70 miles of sewer trunk lines, ranging in size from 4 inches in diameter and larger.
To support uninterrupted services, the Woodlands Division also manages back-up power systems at critical facilities ensuring that wholesale water and wastewater services have continued operation during emergencies or power outages.
Groundwater Reduction Plan (GRP) Division
The GRP Division operates a 30-million-gallon-per-day (MGD) surface water treatment plant that treats raw water from Lake Conroe. Treated water is delivered through a 55-mile pipeline to seven partner utilities, which distribute it to their customers.
Lake Conroe Division
Also, for more than 50-years, the Lake Conroe Division has been serving the community by maintaining Lake Conroe Dam and its infrastructure ensuring that the lake provides a fast-growing Montgomery County with an alternative water supply necessary to help serve the growing population. Lake Conroe is the raw water source for the municipal, commercial, industrial and mining needs.
From source to delivery, SJRA partners with local entities both public and private to provide reliable wholesale water and wastewater services, ensuring that residents, businesses, and industries throughout Montgomery and Harris Counties receive safe, reliable, and cost-effective service.
