Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s… it’s the most wonderful time of the year! Spending time with loved ones and celebrating the holidays is such a joy, but what is not a joy is clogging the pipes with fats, oils, and grease (FOG). Unfortunately, this time of year leads to more clogged pipes than any other season, due to people dumping heavy amounts of food scraps and oils down the drains. These FOGs get lodged in the sink pipes and start to solidify, build up, and eventually clog the pipe altogether.

Thankfully, there’s a way all of us can prevent this from happening! Using a glass jar is one way to collect FOG and safely dispose of it. Another option is using a grease bag to collect FOG and throw it in the trash can. No matter which method you use, just remember to always trash the grease. It is also important to wipe pots, pans, and dishes with a dry paper towel and throw it in the trash before washing the cookware. These easy solutions can save you from having to deal with an expensive plumbing problem over the holidays!

Doing our part on the home front helps ensure that wastewater workers don’t have to deal with costly and labor-intensive sewer maintenance and repairs later down the line. Keeping FOG out of the wastewater system also helps protect the water quality in our communities!
